A short historyHe was born in Scotland on 31st January 1891. His father was Thomas Thomson a wood merchant of Airdrie He was known as Norrie Thomson, Norrie being the surname of his grandfather on his mother's side, he first comes to light as a sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery. He was then commissioned as a 2/Lt into the Queens Own Glasgow Yeomanry, and with them went to the Dardenelles in 1915. To get there they travelled across France in November 1915, but as he was not attached to a unit at that time he did not qualify for the 14/15 Star. They were used dismounted there and when the Gallipoli Campaign drew to a close they were sent to Egypt. Here he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps as an observer, joining "C" Flight of 14 Squadron in time for them to embark to the Hejaz. He was there from November 1916 until May 1917 when he returned to Egypt for pilot training.
On 3rd June 1917 he was recommended for the Military Cross, this was duly awarded in the same London Gazette as Capt. T Henderson and Lt W G Stafford got there's for service in the Hejaz Expedition. On his return to Egypt he was awarded the first of his three mention in despatches and the Order of the Nile
4th Class. By now he was a Lieutenant and by 1918 for a short time an acting Lt/Col, however he soon reverted to his rank of Lieutenant but soon became an acting Captain. In September 1924 he was awarded the Order of Nahda 4th Class, he was lucky, later that month the Kingdom of the Hejaz ceased to exist when it became part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The War and Victory medals are missing from the group so if anyone out there knows their whereabouts please let me know, the pair in the group are an erased pair. |
